N4/5 Administration & IT
Course Overview
Administration and IT provides students with essential skills for work, life and education.
Admin & IT looks at how businesses use Office software to help them run more efficiently. It concentrates on the following software:
- Spreadsheets (Excel)
- Databases (Access)
- Word Processing (Word)
- Presentation Software (PowerPoint)
- Internet searching
- Emails
- E-Diaries
It also helps to develop an understanding of administration in the workplace by the following theory:
- Skills and duties of an Administrator
- Customer service
- Health and safety
- Security of people, property and information
- Sources of information
- File management
- Corporate image
- Electronic communication
Methodology
A variety of active learning and teaching strategies will be involved, from teacher led explanation and discussion to individual work; paired work; group work; researching and presenting information; interpretation and analysis of various sources of information; self and peer evaluation of work produced.
Ipads are used thoughtfully to enhance learning and raise attainment.
Assessment
Pupils are formally assessed using SQA assessment resources. There is a final course assessment which comprises of an externally assessed assignment provided by the SQA. This is done in class time and sent to SQA for marking. This gives the learners an opportunity to demonstrate the key skills that they have gained and consolidated over the year.
Assessment is mainly computer based:
Nat 3 & 4 – Internally assessed computer based tasks
Nat 5
- Computer based timed practical exam = 50 marks (Spreadsheets, databases and theory)
- Computer based timed practical exam = 70 marks (Word processing, communication and theory)
Recording & Reporting
The SQA assessments and homework results form the basis for the comments in tracking reports reports.
All pupil assessments are routinely graded and recorded by the teacher and the results are stored centrally, these results are used by staff to track the progress of the individuals and ensure that their needs are being met. Pupils received written feedback and next steps as well as verbal feedback. Staff report formally to parents via Tracking Reports and at parent consultations as per the school calendar.
